After a relaxing walk through the garden you will carry on to Viseisei Village which is said to be the landing site of the first settlers in Fiji. An indigenous guide will take you through the village and explains the history from times of cannibalism until today.

Traditional Fijian Way of Life – The Real Fijian Experience.

2. Evening tour: Traditional Village

Sigatoka valley, Nakabuta village
This is an evening tour that will introduce you to the traditional, Fijian way of life, which has changed very little over the centuries. The small village Nakabuta is located in the Sigatoka valley, the “salad bowl” of Fiji. It is well known for its pottery and you’ll have the chance to see the village women demonstrate their skill.

The villagers of Nakabuta (only about 100 people) will welcome you with a Kava ceremony and you’ll taste the national drink of the islands; than you’ll be taken through the village, mingle with the people and learn about how they live, in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. While you enjoy your dinner (typical Fijian dishes) you’ll be entertained with dances and songs from the olden days. The villagers will farewell you with the famous Fijian song “Isa Lei” before we take you back to your hotel.

Meet the People – A Day in the Life

4. Full day: Meet the People of Fiji

Nadi, Sigatoka Sand dunes, Pacific Green, Nakabuta Village, Nacovi settlement.
This full day tour introduces you to the two major races of Fiji; the indigenous Fijians and the Indo-Fijians who are descendants of laborers brought into Fiji to work the sugarcane fields. After picking you up from your hotel we will drive towards the south coast of Viti Levu while your guide explains about Fiji; its geography, economy and the current situation. Our first stop is at the famous Hindu Temple in Nadi Town; one of the caretakers will explain all about the stunning temple that has been recently upgraded. A scenic drive to the Sigatoka Sand dunes is next on the agenda. It’s the first National Park of Fiji.

We will take a short walk up to the Clark Lookout with a park ranger who will delve into the history, the significant archeological excavations and the flora of this unique area. After a short stop at Pacific Green, Fiji’s only manufacturer of furniture made from coconut trees, we’ll make our way into the small town Sigatoka. This is the end of the sugarcane belt where we will visit the colorful fruit and vegetable market and give you time to shop as well as hunt and barter for some traditional souvenirs. Than we drive up the fertile Sigatoka valley, the “salad bowl” of Fiji, to Nakabuta village; it is populated by only a hundred or so indigenous Fijians and they welcome us in their traditional way with a Kava ceremony.

Enjoy a Fijian Lunch – Fine Food, Fijian Style

We’ll have a look through the village and see how people live their lives and then enjoy a typical Fijian lunch. In the afternoon we make our way back towards Nadi but will stop at Nacovi, a settlement of mostly Indian cane farmers. We visit one of the families who work the land in their old fashioned and physically demanding way; using bullocks to plough the fields and cutting the sugar cane by wielding machetes. The farmers will provide us with refreshments, tea, juice and typical Indian sweets while providing insights about their way of live. After this interesting and informative day we will take you back to your hotel in time for Happy Hour.

Fabulous Salad Bowl Views – An Array of Spectacular Vistas

6. Full day: Cave tour Sigatoka valley, Naihehe cave

The tour begins with your coach pickup from the hotel and a drive into the Sigatoka Valley for some fabulous views of Fiji’s famous “Salad Bowl” – known for its rich fertile soil and a colorful patchwork of fruit and vegetable crops. Your guide will unveil the fascinating history about the notorious Tongan warriors who reigned in this area and you catch glimpses of the ancient hill fortresses of Tavuni and Matanavatu. On the banks of the river, you’ll participate in an authentic “kava” ceremony and a delicious picnic lunch before taking the bamboo raft across to Toga Village… named in memory of their Tongan heritage.

Cave of Cannibal Tribes – Feel the Mystery

From there, it is a short fun walk towards the “Naihehe caves”. The cave entrance is in a natural tropical garden setting – this was the fortress of Fiji’s last cannibal tribes. It was ruled by a pagan priest and hundreds of people lived inside for months. There are fabulous natural features like stalactites, stalagmites, flow stones and underground springs – but its history makes this cave particularly special. From the cave, you take a 15minute walk through native farms down to the river then board the bamboo raft (known as “bili bili” in the local language) for a ride down the river. After about a half hour ride, you arrive at a landing where the coach awaits you for a transfer back to the hotel.

Ratu Talili, the village leader, and his family will be more than happy to welcome us in the traditional Fijian way, serve a bowl of Kava and tell tales of old and elaborate on how Navala has become the last village in Fiji that consists of only traditional thatched houses.

Bilibili Rides – Slow, Traditional Exploration

From the lodge, we head to the river bank right next to the lodge, take a break for a refreshing swim and its time for a short ride on a “Bilibili” (bamboo raft) while the Boulo Lodge prepares a typical Fijian lunch. After lunch Ratu Talili will take us to Navala, he’ll walk with us through this unique village and explain more about the Fijian way of life.
